"It's pathetic and morally bankrupt for local and county officials to promote a casino despite gamblings proven propensity to inflict addiction, business failures, crimes and escalating costs for police and social services upon the community and call it justice and the people's choice."
DOI Rejects Two Off Reservation Applications
Written by John Randall
Saturday, 05 January 2008

Interior secretary rejects Catskills casino applications today January 04, 2008 MONTICELLO U.S.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne today denied two applications to build casinos in Sulllivan County by denying off-reservation land trusts for two Native American tribes, the Mohawks and the Stockbridge-Munsees.

This bodes well for the No Casino cause in the Columbia Gorge which, in addition to being an off reservation casino 70 driving miles from the Warm Springs reservation, is also located in the heart of a protected scenic area. This adds complexity to the issue and another reason why not to have a casino in the Columbia Gorge.

SALEM -- Two years have slipped by since Gov. Ted Kulongoski signed a contract with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs to build an off-reservation casino at Cascade Locks.

It was a landmark deal, marked by cheers from locals and a promise by the tribes to give the state a cut of the profits for schools. It also provoked an intense political dispute, with some saying a casino would mar the Columbia River Gorge and other tribes complaining it would give Warm Springs an unfair competitive edge.

ALERT!!

An extremely important, precedent-setting decision is now hanging in the balance with Dept.  of Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne: whether to allow the continuation of "off-reservation" gambling (and "fee-to-trust" acquisitions by Indian tribes for that purpose, including the Warm Springs).

Casinos prey on the weak, give little to community
Written by John Randall

From a story on RecordOnline

If Gov. Spitzer's reason for sanctioning a Sullivan County casino is a desperate stab at resuscitating our economy, it is too desperate. The costs of legalized gambling far exceed the benefits, and New York already has one of the highest degrees of prevalence of problem gamblers in the nation.

Boardrooms provide heft to fight casino
Written by DONN ESMONDE
Saturday, 03 February 2007

They could not sit by. They could not do nothing while the community they care about took a huge hit.

Crusaders come in all kinds of clothing. These folks dress in suits and meet in wood-paneled boardrooms. You sometimes need them, the high-powered lawyers and the charitable foundation folks, as much as you need people in flannel shirts with picket signs and protest rallies.
